Chemical Peels

Chemical peels remove damaged outer layers of skin on the face, hands, neck and chest to smooth texture, reduce scarring and remove blemishes and pre-cancerous growths to produce healthy, glowing skin. There are different types of chemical peels: Illuminize, Vitalize, Vi Peel and trichloroacetic acid (TCA). They range in strength from mild to strong and are each designed to provide different results, depending on a patient's skin condition.

What are the benefits of a chemical peel?

A chemical peel can be used to effectively reduce the appearance of wrinkles, age spots, freckles, scarring and blotchiness, as well as improve skin tone and texture by removing damaged layers of skin. This procedure is also now performed on younger patients looking to prevent the signs of aging from appearing too early. A chemical peel can be combined with laser treatment for optimal results.

What are the risks of a chemical peel?

Depending on the type of peel performed, this procedure may lead to pigment changes, persistent redness, scarring, infection and more. However, most peels are performed with no complications, allowing patients to enjoy a younger appearance.

It is important for patients to follow their doctor's instructions after the peel and to avoid prolonged sun exposure in order to maximize the results of their chemical peel.

Laser Peels

Laser skin resurfacing, commonly called a laser peel, removes the outer, damaged layer of skin to reveal a smoother, younger look. Laser resurfacing can reduce the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, uneven pigmentation and superficial scarring, usually on the face. A carbon dioxide (CO2) laser beam of precisely focused light vaporizes the surface skin and reveals the undamaged layer beneath. Procedure time varies depending on the size and condition of the area being treated. The CO2 laser is the most common, but in certain circumstances other lasers may be used.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion removes a layer of surface skin to improve the appearance of facial scarring due to acne, chicken pox, injury or other causes, as well as uneven pigmentation, wrinkles, sun damage, tattoos, age spots and certain kinds of skin lesions.

How does the process work?

The skin is frozen, typically with a spray, and then abraded (or “sanded”) with a high-speed rotary instrument for a dramatically smoother, fresher look.

Will my skin hurt after the procedure?

After the procedure it is normal to feel a sensation similar to sunburn for a week or so, at which time most patients are able to return to work. The newly revealed skin will likely appear pinker than usual for two to three months.

Should newly treated skin be kept out of sunlight?

Exposure to sunlight without adequate protection should be avoided.
